Narcissistic personality disorder, or NPD, is a disorder that causes people to have a distorted image of themselves. People who suffer from NPD have intense and unstable emotions and they are obsessed with power, prestige, personal adequacy, and vanity. They also have less empathy than most people and their sense of superiority is exaggerated.

This disorder is very closely related to egocentrism, where people think that their opinion and interests are the only things that matter. In addition, people with NPD in most cases don’t care about other people’s feelings. They don’t have empathy and don’t care about feelings other than their own.

Before someone can be diagnosed with NPD, there’s a wide range of criteria that needs to be met. Though there are no lab tests that can determine that someone suffers from NPD, blood tests and X-rays will help in ruling out some other health problems that might cause such a condition.

Likewise, there is a wide range of personality disorders and people can suffer from more than one. But, when it comes to NPD, the diagnosis must have the following:

  • Eager for attention
  • Always jealous
  • Demand special treatment
  • Exaggerate their importance, talents, and achievements
  • Extremely sensitive and are easy to get hurt or feel rejected
  • Can’t maintain healthy relationships
  • Fantasize about their own power, success, intelligence, and appearance
  • Don’t feel regret when taking advantage of others to achieve their goals
  • Don’t feel empathy or understanding of other people’s feelings
  • Believe that only special people (other NPD people) understand how unique they are
  • Think that they are romantic
  • Don’t react well at all to criticism
  • Always demand positive reinforcement and praise from others
  • Expect that everyone has to agree with them
  • Always looking for “the best”

Narcissistic personality disorder treatment

For now, there is no cure for NPD. However, with proper psychotherapy, people who suffer from this disorder can learn to understand the problem and positively relate to others around them. They can learn how to change their attitude and have more constructed behavior. This leads to building self-esteem and having realistic expectation from both themselves and others.

There are 3 types of therapy for this disorder:

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Group therapy

For NPD treatment, all three therapies are necessary. But the CBT is the most important one because patients learn how to identify their negative behaviors and beliefs. Also, they learn how to replace negativity with positive, healthful thoughts and actions.


Doctors haven’t discovered yet what causes the NPD. Some say that this disorder can be related to very high parental expectations during childhood, or abuse, neglect or over-pampering or so-called toxic parenting styles. Also, it can come from growing up with parents or family members with manipulative behaviors and learning from them.

Likewise, if a child learns that being vulnerable is completely not acceptable, it may not develop the ability to understand or feel other people’s feelings as a grownup.

People who suffer from a narcissistic personality disorder and don’t treat it, have higher chances of becoming alcoholics or drug abusers. Or suffer from depression as well, have problems with relationships, school, work, and even start having suicidal thoughts.

In addition, studies have shown that male NPD patients have a higher level of cortisol in their bloodstream. This means that they are constantly under stress. Also, a higher level of cortisol means that cardiovascular problems can develop.

Since the dawn of mankind, breath has meant life. So intertwined are the two that in Latin and Greek, breathing and emotions (“breath” and “spirit”) is one word. In Latin, it’s Spiritus, while in Greek it’s Pneuma.
Breathing is so vital to our survival that although we can survive 3 weeks without food and 3 days without water, we can only last 3 minutes without air. But breathing is more than oxygen intake into the body. The way we breathe tells a lot about the way we control our own emotions.

The famous creator of the body-centered psychotherapy Dr. Wilhelm Reich noted that limited and controlled breathing is a necessary “tool” for suppressed feelings, especially anxiety. So, he formulated and applied his principle for the therapeutic purposes – a lower level of oxygen means less energy in the system, and therefore less anxiety to be suppressed. He realized that to restrain feelings and limit emotional expression, it is necessary to control the breathing process.

There are several indicators on the basis of which we can evaluate one’s breathing and emotional expressions. Some of them are:

  • The intensity of breathing and exhaling
  • Spontaneity
  • Rigidity
  • Depth of breathing
  • Speed of expiration
  • Intermittent rhythmic

How do we breathe?

Parts of the body involved in the breathing process are very important. For example, some people breathe by pushing only the upper part of the chest while stretching the diaphragm and the lower part of the chest, while others do the opposite – they move only the diaphragm and the stomach, but not the upper part of the chest. Some people breathe rhythmically, not making breaks between breathing and exhaling, while some not.

Generally, people who are prone to rigid control of feelings breathe shallow and rigidly. They, of course, have no awareness of this, because this pattern of breathing has become chronic and automatic. People who are primarily suppressing fear limit their breath (mainly breathe in the upper part of the breast without the diaphragm and the lower part of the thorax).

Those who suppress the pain primarily, limit both the inhale and exhale equally (blocking the same movements of the chest and diaphragm), while the anger blockers mostly just limit the breath (usually they do not breathe with the upper part of the chest that is immobile in them, while the diaphragm is movable in the presence of muscular tension in the abdomen).

What is your breathing pattern?

Become aware of the moment of your breath. Put one hand on your chest and the other on the stomach. You can close your eyes if it’s easier for you to focus. Breathe in the way you do it normally. Find out if you only move your chest or chest and abdomen while breathing. Is your diaphragm mobile and flexible, or is it hard and immobile? How deep do you inhale and exhale? Do you stress the inhale or the exhale? Is your breathing spontaneous or rigid? Do you make a break between breathing in and breathing out?

Try to breathe now in a natural and spontaneous way. Put one hand on your chest again and the other on your stomach. With your breath, you feel your stomach climbs upwards with oxygen intake, then climbs your chest, and at the breath in, your chest and stomach are spontaneously (unaddressed) at the same time. So, the breathing in starts with your stomach, then chest, and then everything out. Breathe through your nose and breathe through your mouth. Let your mouth open at the time of exhalation. If you feel the need, you can give your breath a spontaneous sound at release.

Establish a rhythm and try to keep it. Concentrate on breathing and body sensation only. This will put your breathing and emotions in balance. If you feel that you have excess oxygen, your hands or some part of your body are pressed, stop briefly or reduce the breathing depth. Breathe in this way for at least ten minutes. How do you feel after this simple breathing exercise? What do you feel in the body? Do you have some pleasant or unpleasant sensations? In which part of the body? Register them.

How do Therapists connect breathing and emotions?

In physical psychotherapy, the therapist looks at the client’s breathing and other signs of physical expression. When he detects certain breathing blockages, the therapist points the client on them so that the client establishes proper breathing. Proper breathing can lead the client to a state of relaxation, a deepened contact with himself, or to a state in which he/she seeks to express a feeling that spontaneously occurs.

In addition to working with breathing patterns, the therapist works in parallel with the contact with the client. The therapist encourages the client to establish eye contact in order to consciously accept and express the feelings he was afraid of expressing. This way, the client has a perfect balance between breathing and emotions and feels safer and more complete.

  1. They always play the victim. The whole world is plotting against them and they are “always the ones to be blamed.” Also, each of your positive ideas or examples is there to “sabotage them”.


  1. They don’t know how to accept a compliment. When you give compliments to toxic people,  they don’t know how to accept and compliment back. This makes you feel uncomfortable as if you don’t believe in their good intentions.


  1. They don’t respect your boundaries. Sometimes they will even urge you to stop the diet, do some things that conflict with your beliefs and to disobey your choices.


  1. They constantly talk about themselves. Always speaking about them, they rarely ask you how you feel or what you are doing. They are full of themselves and generally call you only when they need something.


  1. They can’t keep a secret – Toxic people always share your intimate stories with other people from the environment, even if they promised to keep it as a secret. The information about you will be kept in order to be able to manipulate you tomorrow and gain some benefit. The word “confidential” does not exist for them.
